Description
British diplomacy in the Great War was focussed on detaching Germany and Austria from their smaller allies in the Balkans, thus isolating the Central powers. They succeeded in bribing, persuading or cajoling Rumania to join them in 1916 but the move proved disastrous when Rumania was swiftly crushed and forced to conclude a humiliating peace. Bulgaria, by contrast, under its wily monarch Foxy King Ferdinand proved steadfast in its support for Germany and Austria, despite its traditional ethnic and religious links to Russia. This book is an account by Britains military attaché in Bulgaria, Lt. Col. the Hon. H.D. Napier, of his efforts to coerce Bulgaria. It provides an interesting sidelight on the Great War and the Balkans in the early 20th century.
