Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724-1804) published a series of works recording his observations on the picturesque across British landscapes. This work of 1798 describes his travels from Wiltshire westwards through Somerset and Devon to Cornwall, returning via Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
